Subject Intent

The Modern Foreign Language curriculum at Whitehill Community Academy is delivered through timetabled lessons, using the scheme Language Angels, and experience sessions helping to understand French culture. When designing the language curriculum, the full national curriculum for languages was taken into consideration, ensuring that pupils are exposed to all of the aims and more.

The languages curriculum at Whitehill Community Academy is designed to give pupils the knowledge and skills needed to become confident language learners who can express their ideas and thoughts in French. The study of a foreign language gives pupils the opportunity to develop their communication skills, both in speech and writing, and encourages new ways of thinking. The curriculum helps to foster curiosity in pupils and to deepen their understanding and respect of the world.

The curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils grow to be respectful learners who take responsibility for the world that they live in; the study of languages spans a wide range of cultures and traditions and pupils gain an appreciation of the way that others live and communicate with one another.

The languages curriculum at Whitehill Community Academy is designed to deliver the National Curriculum aims via the French language; knowledge is structured so that each term and year build upon one another and ensures pupils gain the essential knowledge within the areas of vocabulary building, phonics acquisition and grammatical understanding. Pupils simultaneously develop their skills within the areas of listening, reading, speaking and writing and use the knowledge acquired to practise and improve these skills.

The depth of knowledge gained will give pupils the strong foundations for further learning of not only their first foreign language, but also future languages which in turn will broaden career and living prospects to pupils as the opportunity to work in a wide variety of countries and locations becomes accessible to them. French is taught throughout KS2, covering a wide range of topics.

Golden Threads

To enable our subject leaders to provide a robust approach to the Languages curriculum, knowledge and skills are structured so that each term and year build upon one another. This is done by mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ of our Languages curriculum. Through mapping out the ‘Golden Threads’ we can ensure that pupils are given lots of opportunities to perfect their skills, knowledge and understanding.

The Golden Threads of ‘Modern Foreign Languages’ are:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Vocabulary
  • Role play
  • French culture
